A Late-Night Epiphany That Redefined My Purpose

It was late one night, years ago, when the weight of it all hit me. I sat at a cluttered dining room table—papers strewn with calculations, coffee mugs stacked like towers, and my heart pounding with doubt. I’d just left a stable corporate job in 2016, chasing a dream to build something meaningful. My wife’s concerned eyes and my son’s quiet presence lingered in my mind as I wrestled with the unknown. Then, in the stillness, a single question pierced through the chaos: Why am I doing this? That moment, detailed in Chapter 3 of The Purposeful Entrepreneur, wasn’t just a personal breakthrough—it’s the question every entrepreneur must face. Whether you’re starting out or scaling up, your “why” is your compass, guiding you through storms and setbacks. In this post, I’ll share how I found mine, why it matters, and how you can uncover yours to build a business that’s not just successful, but purposeful. Ready to dig in? Let’s explore.

The Power of “Why”

I didn’t always know my “why.” Early on, survival drove me—landing clients, paying bills, keeping the lights on (Page 51). But that late-night epiphany shifted everything. Inspired by Simon Sinek’s Start With Why (Page 50), I realized people don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it. My answer? To make high-quality, affordable solutions accessible to small businesses—leveling the playing field against corporate giants. That clarity turned uncertainty into action.

Finding Your Own

So, how do you find yours? Start with reflection. Think back to why you began—maybe it was freedom, impact, or a problem you couldn’t ignore. For me, it was seeing small teams struggle with tools they couldn’t afford (Page 52). Next, identify your impact. Who benefits from your work? My wife, son, and co-founder Shero (Page 3) kept me anchored, but it’s the clients—those we empower—that fuel me. Finally, test it. Run decisions through your “why”—does this client align? Does this project fit? When I said no to a misaligned partnership (Page 60), it saved my sanity.

Living It Daily

Your “why” isn’t static. As my business grew, it evolved—now it’s about legacy, not just survival (Page 53). I use it to filter opportunities, like choosing HRSimplified’s focus on usability over flash (Page 54). It’s also a lifeline. During tough times—like the client loss in year two (Page 153)—revisiting my purpose kept me going. Write yours down today. Is it to inspire? To solve? To provide?

Actionable Takeaway

Take 10 minutes now. Grab a notebook—channel that late-night energy—and answer: Why did I start this? What keeps me going? How do I want my clients to feel? (Inspired by Page 63’s reflective questions.) My “why” emerged from chaos; yours might too. Share it in the comments—I’d love to hear! This isn’t fluff—it’s the heartbeat of your business. Once clear, let it guide you. When a lucrative but misaligned project came my way (Page 55), my “why” said no, protecting my mission. Test it this week: face a decision and ask, “Does this serve my purpose?” Adjust as you grow—mine did (Page 59).
